Fowler Sight question?

How was this sight applied? It is on an original early 19th century half stock English fowler. Looks like silver bead and pewter? The pewter looking spider is flush with the barrel and the barrel is relatively thin at the muzzle.

All I have seen like that are silver and are inlet in the barrel.

I agree, it’s most likely all silver. It’s only shiny on top of the sight because of wear. The rest is just tarnished by being in contact with the sulfur in black powder.

Hi David,
The sight is a silver spider sight and the legs are inlet into undercut mortices in the barrel and then filed flush.

That’s how I applied mine on the current build. Inlet it then soldered for good measure. I could/ will do better ( no solder) next time.

Hi David,
I may put a spider sight on my English fowler that I have been posting recently. If I do that, I will show the process.  I am working right now on making the barrel appear to be Spanish, which involves stamped marks for the maker and the town in which he worked, and other decorative barrel marks. Working on other peoples guns plus figuring out how to make authentic looking Spanish barrel marks has slowed me down a bit recently but I will get to it.
