Okay, so does anybody here know what the best ball size and Patch thickness combo would be best for this type of rifling?
This is a 50 caliber.

I would use a .490 ball with a .020”-.024” denim or twill patch.

Okay I will certainly get that a try thank you for the response. I've shot black powder for a little while but I'm new to patch and ball. I'm used to shooting conical bullets.

Buy some 490s and 495s and try both with the patch suggested. Use a liquid lube or tracks mink oil.

Rethinking the load suggestions, the rifling is probably 16/1000 deep so I would go with the 495 ball and 24/1000 patch, start with 60+_ gr. 2f and work up to 80-90 gr. at 5 grain increments, 10 shot groups at 50 yds. JMHO

Are you sure thats a Rice barrel ? Ive never seen a 50 cal rice with 6 groove rifling, they usually have 7, Colerain uses 6 groves on their barrels. Should shoot good either way.

I'd start with a .495 RB and .018 "The Minute-Men" patching (very tough weave).  My Rice .50 came awake at about 70 grains of 2f.  Those deep round bottom grooves take some working to get to seal.  You may have to go with a thicker patch than .018.  Use something slippery for wetlube and be prepared to use a starter.  Hope this helps.  God Bless,   Marc

Thank you for all the replies that you gave me. I'll use some of this information at the range. Found out today it's probably a Colerain barrels not a rice Barrel even though when I ordered the rifle it was supposed to be a rice barrel with square bottom rifling not round bottom. So I'm in the process of emailing to figure out what we're going to do about this. Should I keep this Barrel or should I work out something else with them.

if you ordered the rifle it should be as agreed upon or adjustments should be made unless any understood examination or guarrantee time frame has passed .  colerain and rice barrels are not the same price unless things have changed recently.  J M O
my rice barrel has 6 grooves.  double check which one you have.

They actually say that the Colerain is $25.00 more.they do make 6 groove barrels but not in 50 cal.

If this is Track, their standard kits come with no-brand barrels as I understand it. Then anything with a brand is an up charge. This does not mean the no-brand barrels are inferior. Don’t know. But they are less expensive.

Now it's Tennessee Valley muzzleloader. I waited over 8 months for this freaking thing to be built. I mean it's a gorgeous rifle. The workmanship is unbelievable.

Just load it, shoot it, and enjoy it. There have been hundreds of barrel makers.

When I got my Rice 50 cal with round bottom rifling, Jason recommended starting with a .490 ball and .018 pillow ticking.  Then start with either 70 grains for 2F, or 60 grains for 3F, and work up in 5 grain increments until you're pleased with results.

The Rice .50 radius groove barrel I own has 6 grooves.  I've been shooting a .490" ball with .023" canvas patching.  70 grains of 3F gives great accuracy out to 100yds, the farthest distance on the range where I shoot but so does 30 grains of 2F (at 25 yds).

I thought rice didn't make a 6 Groove radius for 50 cal?
