Ramrod groove scrapers

I realize that these look like something that would turn up in a cell search, at  a prison , but they really are pretty handy. I made a scraper years ago from a file bent at an angle and shaped \ sharpened  etc. It works good sometimes. I made these a couple years back, and I use them much more , than the file one.  I have a "bunch " of old spade bits , so I took a 5\16   bit and ground a radius on the end, it is the one on the right. It worked so well that I made the 3\8 one , which will get a more formal handle "sometime" .  I find that these work extremely well , because I can easily adjust the angle ,to find the angle that each individual stock "likes" to be scraped at. The bent file is much more prone to chatter, in my experience. These cut very smoothly and just roll out beautiful curls . I have used them for touching up places in channels, and I have used them to do the whole channel , after getting it started with a gouge. If I put some arm into it and the wood is working good , I have scraped in a whole channel in a short amount of time. Another good thing about these is that they are easy to make, inexpensive , and if you don`t like them , you`re not out a lot of time , or money. I really like them and , won`t be without. WARNING these cut nicely , but if you plan to do a whole channel with one , be prepared for a shoulder and wrist workout , but HEY!  longrifle building aint for sissies anyway , Right!! ;) ; ;Thanks Nate

I have  5/16" and 3/8" pieces of plain steel round stock 3' long that I have ground on the end so that the edges are sharp.  You can push this along the channel (lean up just a hair, so it digs in) and scrape away.
When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."

Many, many thanks!  Been working that danged hole with sandpaper stuck to a dowel, and hardly getting anything done.  Like you, I have many spade bits that I haven't used since I got my set of Forstner's.  Well, except for running wiring through wall studs/
I will start on my channel scrapers at once!

Oh yeah, so handy and quick. Shown below are mine made of old files. The one on the left is my barrel channel scraper, the other two for different sized ramrod channel scraping.
