Early Dickert Finished
« on: June 23, 2018, 09:53:00 PM »
Recently completed this build, number 3 for me, 2nd from a blank.  Tried to stay as close to RCA #48 with the architecture as possible.  I did end up with a rifle that is more than likely not as robust in the wrist area as the original due to the fact that I used a Rice B wt barrel.  But it shoulders real nice and points well, should be real pleasant to shoot, carry and hunt with.  I didn't weigh it, but she feels somewhere between 7-8 lb range.  It was my first attempt at a brass patchbox, curved hinge, slightly domed, needless to say, it was a learning experience, as is my engraving - lets just say I have a ways to go.
Here's what I used:
Rice B wt barrel - 50 cal - 38"
Siler deluxe gunmakers lock
Davis golden age triggers - I made the rear set from an old file
Patchbox from .050 sheet
Sideplate and muzzle cap from sheet

A big thanks once again to all you guys on ALR -tremendous resource of knowledge and experience here.

Very nice rifle. I really like that rich dark finish. Engraving looks very appropriate. Would like to see a close-up of the patchbox.

That's nice work.  The stock color and finish is a winner.

Having built 3 Dickert's like this one I know it well. You did a real fine job on it, especially for your 2nd attempt from a blank! Looks like an experienced builder did it.

Hi Guys,  Thank you all for your replies and words of encouragement.  It really means a lot coming from this talented group.
I should have mentioned I started with a blank from Wayne Dunlap that I purchased at Dixon's last July.  For my finish schedule I used Ferric Nitrate DA mix 5:1, then followed with a thinned coat of Dangler/Klein red brown, then a thinned coat of brown, burnished, then 8 coats of Chambers oil.  For the metal I did 2 applications of LMF rust brown, scuffed back, then 2 coats of Oxpho blue, rubbed back with 4/0 steel wool.

Nate - Thanks for the patchbox observation.  It was a bear, but by my third iteration I got it right.  I believe(and I learned this from all you guys here), the small details achieved by modifying bought parts or making your own are what make these guns authentic.

OkieBoy - I took a few closer pics of my patchbox and lock detail and posted below.  My engraving needs work, as does some of my 18th century design, but hey, that's all part of this journey and what makes it fun is knowing you can improve.

Having only recently started in this long rifle building, I am terribly envious of your skills and abilities.  You have really created a thing of beauty, and now you can begin to enjoy the fruits of your labors.

That patchbox is the cat's meow!

I think constantly looking for where I last placed the next tool I need is really slowing me down.  Personally, I think Shop Dog Sunny pirates them away and buries them in the woods, then, when she is done laughing at my efforts, she relents and digs the tools back up.

Thanks for showing us that beautiful rifle.

Very tastefully executed, and you did not yield to the temptation to over carve or over engrave it.  What you did is well done.  I particularly like the effect of the copper rivets on the PB.  Gives it an "old timey" and authentic look.  YOu should be very satisfied with what you have done.
