flintlock rifle finished
« on: July 04, 2018, 08:23:51 PM »
Today I finished my Fowler rifle on scale. As I told in my last post the walnut has a very open structure, so it splinters very easy.
I had in my mind to make silver inlay, but with this wood I do not think it will work as I want.
I am happy with the result as it is now.

Some details!

Just lovely.  I like the shell carving at the tang in tiny scale.  :-)  God Bless,  Marc

What is the gray finish on the barrel?

Adrie, I think my mind ran out of superlative adjectives to describe your work.  You, Sir, are a true Craftsman!

Dave,

You asked for the grey finish on the barrel.
I used 3M Tri-M-ite Frecut sandpaper P320.
I use it for the barrel and the lock. For me it gives a nice satin look.

Oh my ... remove the hand from the picture (which adds scale) ... and it looks like one could load it up and take it shooting!

Bravo! Your detail work on such fine parts encompasses both artistry and craftsmanship.
All of my muzzleloaders will shoot into one ragged hole ALL DAY LONG ... it's just the 2nd or 3rd & other shots that tend to open up my groups ... !

Adrie:  that is a most impressive piece of work.  All it needs now is a Lilliputian hunter.  Great accomplishment!!

That fowler is at once beautifully crafted and mind-boggling (due to the scale). That is quite an accomplishment.

I was fortunate enough to actually handle his work! Pictures are hardly able to show the incredible craftsmanship. I’m curious what will be next.....

Very nice Adrie, Thanks. I really enjoy builds like this.
Im curious as to the actual  length of pull and overall length. I tried taking standard dimensions times .4 but got goofy numbers.
I’m especially interested in the weight.  I think this is a gun my messed up shoulders could carry all day. ;D

Here a drawing on real scale of Track & Wolff, that I used.
I placed my rifle on scale on it, so you can see the difference.
The weight is around 500 gram. I do not no the weight of an English Fowler on full scale.

I am still thinking of what to make next, but I think I am going to use maple.
Thanks for all your support and help!

Thanks Adrie,
That answers all my questions. My (X .4) numbers now don’t seem that wrong. And 500 grams (1.1 pound) !!!  I love it.

Bob.

Adrie,
that fowler turned out very nice!  You did a wonderful job on it.

I had the pleasure of seeing this fowler in person before it was finished, I am not surprised that it turned out so well.

How about a Colonial period (pre Revolution) rifle next Adrie?

Cheers,
Norm
