A Bullish rifle gun
« on: July 05, 2018, 12:22:17 AM »
Been working on this Bull style rifle in between the remodel job of my daughters house. It has a persimmon stock, 46" Rice .40 barrel and Chambers late Ketland lock. I hope to have it finished up here soon and off to its new owner.

Looks great, love that wood. How hard is it to work?

Fine rifle Brian. They just keep getting better. I believe I know where to find another piece of persimmon. Tim

Dennis its about the same hardness as sugar maple but it's more chipy I think. I like it better than walnut.

Dana, thanks for checking on the engraving.

Tim, good thing I kept your rifle a little longer. The rammer just about didn't come out the other day. It's been in an a/c shop but we've had lots of rain and humidity the last couple weeks and the rammer swelled up. I scraped it down a bit and refinished it so maybe it will be good for Alabama swamps now.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments.

Where did you get the persimmon stock blank? I was asking around about one a year or two back and none of the stock guys I contacted had any.

That is a classy, simple rifle of great beauty and character.

Lucky find on that persimmon blank, and you truly did justice to it.

Brian, Your rifle is full of Bull! ::)  Nicely done!  Clean lines. I bet it holds well!  Good Job!!    Nate     NOTE:  all beginners should study the bottom picture , showing the front of trigger guard. The way the lock plate is exposed above the surface of the lock  panel , down to the bevel on the lock plate .. That is about as close to a perfect example , as you will see ! The lock isn't buried down in the wood. Nice Job!!!

Another Beauty. Are you going to leave the metal to take care of itself?

You've done a wonder job on that rifle Brian. Clean, architecture correct from nose to butt.

I like that a lot. How did you finish it? I bought a small piece of persimmon for a banjo fretboard and according to that supplier, Persimmon has a Janka hardness value of 2300 compared to 1450 for hard Maple. It's definitely a hard wood. Well done on the rifle, it's very unique.

Tim, the metal will be dark when finished as will the stock.

The stock has nitric acid stain on it.
