Reboring and rifling antique barrel
« on: July 16, 2018, 04:36:12 PM »
Hello y'all.I have a 1" x 35' antique barrel I would like to get reworked into a 50 cal. It is presently a 30 cal. Does Mr DeHass do this sort of work? I have one of his 58 cal barrels that is just impressive in shooting . Any suggestions appreciated. I have a specific build in mind for this barrel. Have a goodun, Dave 8) 8)

There’s a good reason why old barrels are rarely thin or light. Being forge welded, and wrought iron, they depend a lot on wall thickness for safety. If this were my project, I would think about resizing to a .40 caliber rather than a .50 just to retain a little extra wall thickness.

I’d consult a book like the old Lyman manual about pressure and caliber. I seem to recall that small calibers have higher pressure could be mid-remembering. Lining a barrel is also a possibility. But if you want s specific guy to re-rifle the barrel, consult with him.

Bob Hoyt re-rifles and also re-lines barrels, using his own cut-rifled liners.
