That’s kind of an expansive question, since there was no single set of dimensions for a “jaeger” rifle.  Kind of like asking what the dimensions are for a Kentucky Rifle.

If you have a specific rifle in mind, that would probably be very helpful.  Also, you might want to look at Muzzle Loader Builders Supply, or Track of the Wolf, who offer plans with specific dimensions.

Whenever considering dimensions for a gun, I start with the buttplate and the barrel. Those determine the basic dimensions.

5 1/2" is too tall for the buttplate. 4 3/4" to 5" might be better and 2" to 2 1/4" wide.. All the other dimensions will be dictated by the barrel size and the thickness of the lock bolster. You had better think about your pull as well, they were usually pretty short, 13" or less. Have you ever handled an original?

No never handled any and I only build Hawkins and longrifles before. This will be a challenge cause I will make everything myself no gun parts here

I agree with Ed Wenger get a good set of blueprints and really study them. Muzzleloader Builders Supply once sold a blue print by Houston Harrison taken from an original. They also sell jaeger buttplates and trigger guards. Tim

Hi Hunterwild,
Are you trying to make a jaeger that might have been used during the Rev War?  The military rifles had fairly consistent design and were mostly made by a small number of makers. The early gun were well made but later in the war the quality of German rifles declined a lot.

Honestly, you will HAVE to handle some original German guns to even begin to get things close to right.  I see so many modern "Jaeger" rifles that are stomach-wrenchingly wrong.  Even if well-executed.   ;D  Being in Nicaragua, no doubt you're not likely to run into any 18th century German rifles, though...  And you can't get mail in Nicaragua?  How do you get your barrel and parts???

German rifles come in many forms.  Some of the forms are kind of hard to pinpoint exact locations on, while others are unmistakeable.  A rifle from Wien will look nothing like a rifle from Berlin, which will look nothing like a rifle from Frankfurt am Main.

As far as general dimensions, well that can change from here to there too, but think buttplates of around 5" tall, some more, some less, and 2 1/4" or more wide.  No more than 2 1/2" of drop at the heel (generally rather less), fairly level combs, REAL nice flat cheekpieces... actual cheekpieces, not horrible, hollowed out, jaw-jabbing chin pieces.  ;D   1/4"-3/8" of cast off at the heel, toe out, cast off at the nose of the comb, wrist 1 1/2" high and wide (minimum, for most normal guns.  1 5/8" is often better)...

The Pistor rifle, though not made in Prussia, follows the Prussian form, as so many others did (you will see this basic style used well into the 19th century).  Assuming everything is right on the published "Pistor" rifle drawing plans, the wrist is about 1 11/16" high, and 1 9/16" wide.  Drop at heel is close to 2", no more.  Pull is 13 1/2".  Buttplate is 4 7/8" high and about 2 1/4" wide, with that weird Prussian egg shape.  I think this drawing is a little bit screwy, actually, but it gets you in the ballpark.

By the way, I'm not really a huge fan of the rounded cheekpieces.  They're not really a normal thing, except for the army rifles, and a few oddballs here and there.

Again, everything you ask for except for the drop depends on the diameter of the barrel and the amount of flare it has and the thickness of the lock bolster. The wood at the lower forend will be 1/8" on either side of the barrel.

You might consider going to Jim Chambers' website and buying his book on jeagers….of course I guess they'd have to bring it in on a mule or something. You're probably going to have a difficult time doing one of these correctly only with the information you find on the internet. I have never seen a kit offered anywhere that was anything near right. In fact I have seen very few modern built jeagers that were even remotely right, everybody makes them GIGANTIC.

Can you even build a gun down there with out going to prison?

I hope so or I will be the first. Lots of them here though. I have a friend who is a master gun builder from Europe and most of his stuff has the jaeger theme. But centre fire. I will use a 11/8 to 1inch taper barrel. In anyone has pics I'd appreciate seeing them

Thanks hunterwild

Shumway's Rifles of Colonial America, Vol I, has several Jaegers illustrated, including the Pistor rifle, (and there is one in Vol. 2, also) and with the wealth of dimensions that Shumway provides in RCA the application of a little bit of basic algebra should allow you to draw up a pretty accurate blueprint. Not exact, due to distortions in the photography, but close enough. If it is military rifles you are after, DeWitte Bailey has several illustrated in British Military Flintlock Rifles - his illustrations are nowhere near as plentiful as Shumway's, nor are his dimensions as plentiful or as consistent, but he does provide enough dimensions that a bit of algebra to scale known dimensions to unknown should get you a ballpark figure. The same is true with Shumway's Jaeger Rifles: Collected Articles, which are mostly civilian rifles.

Also, be aware that a lot of early German rifles have breech dimensions quite a bit larger than 1 1/8 - if you are using a "D" weight barrel, the largest easily available these days, to replicate one you are going to have to adjust other dimensions here and there to compensate. That requires a lot of attention to proportion instead of just slavishly following the exact dimensions of the original.

I'd use a swamped barrel. I have a jeager build coming up, 25" swamped barrel in .58  with a 1-34 twist, 1 5/16" at the breech. I won't be at it for a year or better. You might look at some gun auction sites, they usually have lots of pictures there, but no dimensions.

Collected Articles Published in Muzzle Blasts, by George Shumway, has over 200 pages of Jaegers from different parts of Germany as well as Denmark. The majority of the guns describe length of barrel, caliber, breech and butt plate dimensions. It is not an expensive book in paperback form. You can get it from TOW and other dealers.

The Jaeger I posted photos of has a barrel very close to the dimensions Mike Brooks mentioned.  Mine is 54 caliber.  If you look close at the photos you will notice there are a silver heel and toe caps but no butt plate.  Also a very unusual catchment for the patchbox lid.
kind regards, heinz
