.54/28 guage wads
« on: May 31, 2009, 08:56:32 PM »
I just bought a .54/28 ga smooth bore fusil D flinter and do not have any wads/overshot cards. No where local to buy them so I either have to wait to shoot it with shot :-[ or substitute something of for them. I have heard of the old timers using wasp nests but since I don't have any of those either what can I use? I have never fired a smooth bore with ball much less with shot so I need educating.
Thanks
Dennis

I get my wads and cards from Flintlocks inc., at (317) 933-3441. Their e-mail is flintlocks@embarqmail.com .  They've got everything you need, and then some.

One option is .54cal Oxyoke prelubed wool wads in case anyone around you carries those locally...I use them a lot and they work great.

I also use Circle Fly 1/2" prelubed fiber cushion wads, and their OS cards.

One source (not a good source) is to trace one known wad and cut them out with scissors . . . takes forever to do a bunch, but it does work OK.
