My spring making method or the 4:45PM comedy hour

I present this post on Bob's behalf!

These pictures show my mainspring making method and I'm using the same blank shown
in the last pictures showing the milling machine and tapering fixture. The last picture in this
group shows me lightly striking the side of the spring to align the upper and lower limbs.
There was supposed to be one showing the moment of forging but apparently it failed to
show.The sear spring is done in a similar way but is held in a different fixture made for the
small size springs.

In the picture below the lock there is the sear spring fixture shown with a
small bolt showing. It is two parts that capture the spring without crushing the
eye of the spring where the screw goes thru. It is adjustable for length according
to what lock I'm making.
My wife and I hope to be at the CLA Show on Friday and my wife's knee pain
will hamper her from wandering around with me but the Kibler's have offered to
give her (us) a place to park while we're there.FINE people,those two + baby Henry.

wow.....your available work bench real estate looks like its at a premium! i am familiar with that. always thought a spotless bench is indicative of not much being created. i constantly have to set my glasses down.....and then have to feel through the "chaff" to relocate them! anyways i make springs pretty much the same way.

I have been accused of having an Englishman's work bench.Maybe so
but I am not a neat freak beyond taking care of the machines because
without them I'd be a lost ball in the high weeds.

Thanks Taylor! This is something I have been looking for. I have a commercial flint with a broken sear spring that is stupid accurate. It was my first.

Years ago I got this at a local hardware store.I don't know if
there are any still in business or not but here in Huntington WV
we have ONE left,a big one that sells building supplies and we
have ordered a new sink cabinet and counter top to be custom
made by them. I can ask the owne of this one about a small anvil but I would think there are
people here on this list can tell us where to find a new one.I also have a Starrett bench block
but rarely use it.

These postings that Taylor Sapergia posts for me are intended to help others
who may not have a big budget for tools.The bench grinder adaptations are
an example.Another one I have used are vise jaws mounted on precision dowel pins
for fast changes in different set ups,mostly for a milling machine.These quick change
jaws can be steel,hard or mild,bronze,brass or aluminum as needed. This idea can
also be used on a common bench vise as well.
I will try to furnish other ideas as I remember them that pertain to our interests.

No,the small blue bottle bernz-o-matic can be used to draw the temper on a spring
and I use one but with an adapter I made that will focus the point of the fire it gives.
The torch shown when I bent that spring was a Presto Lite used a lot by plumbers
for soldering. The tip shown is the #3 for that system and I use a #5 for heating the
whole spring.

regulator that will work.
