Coming down to the wire...
« on: August 03, 2018, 06:56:48 AM »
Just 2 weeks till the CLA, and I need to finish and install the sights, brown the barrel, and polish the lock.

Hope to have it completed in time.
See ya there,
Jeff

Wow, that's nice. I learn something from every one of the guns you guys post pictures of. I like the way your artwork is sometimes disjointed or 'implied', ending or beginning out of nowhere, connected but not really, yet perfectly maintains the flow and appeal. Very cool.

I would consider it as a huge favor to see the lock before and after polishing.

I can think of no higher praise than what Mike Brooks offered.

Pure d dad gum nice!

Jeff, I have admired the beauty of that rifle and marveled at your skill in building it when I had the opportunities to see and handle it at Boonesborough.  I am certainly looking forward to seeing it again shortly.

EXCELLENT work on that patchbox! You did your own variation of a standard carving theme and pulled it off very well too. Very pleasing to look at. Would like to see MORE pics!

Here's a few more pictures of the finished parts, and as requested, the unfinished lock.  It so happens that the lock was a mid-build change.  I started with a delux Siler, but after I had it inletted I realized it just didn't fit the curvature of the wrist, so I ordered a Chambers Gunmaker's lock and that's what is on it now.

Sorry for the lousy photography.

Wow, looks great Jeff. Really like how you shaped the lock plate. Sorry I won’t get to see it. I’ll have to miss CLA this year.

Oh, to answer the question, the finish is Tried and True Oil Varnish.  5 very thin coats I believe.

That patch box hinge is a fake. ;) Everyone here tells me it's physically impossible to make a curved hinge work. ;D You seemed to pull it off quite well.

I'm sure I saw it at Boonesborough (maybe more than once :)), but it was nowhere close to the finished product.  Looks very nice!  Now what next?
