Flintlock rifle.
« on: August 04, 2018, 03:22:43 PM »
On the 4th of July I finished the Fowling rifle on scale.
Now I see the rifle in a different way, I like that rifle!
I have one lock on stock and I use it for an other Fowler. This time I make barrel key's.
I already made the iron parts.
Now I have to make the stock.
Is it wrong to use maple for an English Fowler?

Your work still amazes me - You will have to ask someone with much more knowledge that me about the walnut/Maple question...

Adrie, as usual, I truly admire your work!  Very precise, neat workmanship!  Remind me again what scale you build to.

Although I believe most English-built fowlers and rifles were stocked in English walnut, maybe it is not unheard of to have a few stocked in maple.

Certainly the maple, with it's finer grain, would be more suitable for a rifle or fowler built on this scale.  I have gotten some fine detail in good walnut when carving or checkering.  If you go with walnut, be sure to check for suitable grain.

Hi,
Beautiful and amazing work!!  Most British guns were stocked in English walnut but there were some maple stocked guns as well. There was a fad using burl maple during the late 17th and very early 18th centuries.  However, burl maple tends to crack and chip easily and many of those guns were restocked in walnut later in their working lives.  Having said that, however, there is a very fine pair of early 19th century John Manton dueling pistols stocked in figured maple and shown on Lewis Drake's antique firearm web site.

Amazing...was the first word that popped into my mind too!

Don't know about the English, but the French were importing our maple for gunstocks as early as 1700.

Hi,

I found a nice piece of walnut for the stock. The structure of the wood is very compact.
I went to a shop for special kinds of wood. The had a lot but I did not find what I was looking for.
This time my wife was whit me and I showed her all the different kinds of wood.
Suddenly she said: "I think that is also walnut". And what a surprise, There was a lot of walnut in
a dark side of the shop and there I found one good piece. Next time I take the expert with me again!
This wood is also good for silver inlay.
I show you the results of the Fowling on scale until now.

When I have finished the Fowling I will show the result.

Adrie,
Fantastic work as usual.  Didn't I tell you that you would like this site.  It would have been tragic if the ALR members didn't get to see your work.  Keep it up.

Hello,

I show you the pictures of the finished Fowling rifle.
The silver inlay was quite difficult, I want to make things round, but the grain of the wood pushed me straight on.
I also made the side plate of silver.

For the fun I also show you my barrel key.

Andrie - beautifully done, a fine looking replica. Your work has improved greatly since you first posted on ALR.
