What do you guys have faith in to protect your bores if you don't plan to shoot for a few weeks or months?

Vaseline, been useing it for years in my black powder guns . it stays put, chris popp.

I never heard that one before. Do you just run a patch with vaseline down the barrel after you are done cleaning?

I would be worried about getting so much down the barrel that it would block the nipple or touch hole inside the barrel.

Touch hole is an easy fix, but some percussion guns have some twists and turns to get down to the powder, at least I think I was told that by someone.

Remington Wonder Lube with Teflon,,or spray silicone Spray a patch run it down the barrel Then dry patch and good to go.

I'm with Mark, but use Castrol SynTec. Both work equally well, easy to clean out quickly when needed.

3-in-1 oil for 50+ years now with no problems. If the firearm won't be shot for a while I lather the oil on, if not then a thin coating will do. Always run a clean patch down the bore to remove excess oil before loading.

I prefer oil, the one that is handy.

I'd use bear grease if I could get more, but I have to stretch my little supply. These modern guys that go bear hunting never seem to understand my desire to get bear fat from 'em.

Ballistol, 3 in 1 oil, 30 or 20 or 10 weight oil of any brand, VVL-800. All will work. The important part I have found is if the rifle will not be used within a few weeks, return to the bore a day or two after cleaning and wipe it dry with clean patches, then re-oil. I have rifles with excellent bores that have not been required oiling in over three years using this method. No problems.

INote that flipping a patch over and reusing it only serves to put the dirt/water your patch removed onto your jag. That dirt/water is then deposited on the clean side of your second patch. When you flip the second patch over, that dirt/water is deposited back into your bore. Patches are cheap, barrels are not.

I put a thin coat in the bore. dab vasiline on patch,then put on the jag. push down the bore, if a flat breech , like a flintlock , I dab a small glob on the end of the patch while on the jag. push it down. this makes sure you get to the corners of the breech. I store my gun,s butt down, that way I don't have to worry about it running out the breech end. it stays put. I also use it to lube my lock insides. I also use it on my revolver's . I wipe it out of my rifles before I shoot. just one patch, the revolvers I just load powder and ball and shoot. remember thin coat, chris popp.

Rig in the bore and to wipe down the outside of the barrel and lock with it as well. It's great stuff.

WD-40 for short term, Break Free Collector (long term storage preservative developed for the military) stood up muzzle down in safe. Run a patch with denatured alcohol down bore before shooting.

Speaking of denatured alcohol, where are you guys buying it? I've been to two China Marts and they say they don't carry it.
