Mike, on Ohio route 33, just south of Marysville, there is a highway rest stop.  Both north and south, the rest stop is in a grove of nice, straight hickory trees.  If I were you, I'd make sure the old chain saw was running good, and maybe harvest a tree or two.  Cut them in about 6' lengths - cannot think many ramrods are longer than that.

Use a froe for splitting.

Danny Putz is a good guy. I've bought a lot osage from him for making bows, mostly in the shape of sawn lumber. It's always dry, straight, clear, and sawn whichever orientation I ask for. 95% of it has been nicer than any osage I've seen. He offered to sell me ramrods, but I have a stack of prime hickory. I asked him about curly maple when I talked to him a few weeks ago, he didn't have any, but he did have a stack of thick walnut planks he'll be planing soon.

Been splitting my own for years, still have some unsplit logs in the barn. I'm too busted up to continue doing that sort of thing.

Yes, I recall you mentioning that you split out your own and round them.  But every time the Vet Admin van takes me to the hospital in Columbus, we stop at that rest stop - both ways.  And every time I look at those beautiful trees, I think of you, and you splitting out your ramrods!
Really sorry to hear that, like me, you are getting older and easy things that we used to do are now a major chore!  But we will both persevere in our black powder doings - just takes a different method or getting someone to do the hard part.  I figure it is always better doing things slow than not doing them at all!
