Olive tinted blank
« on: September 27, 2018, 01:27:20 AM »
Bought an inexpensive maple stock blank for my first effort at inletting a barrel, tang, lock, ramrod channel and butt plate by hand.  This wood has a light olive colored tint at various places throughout the length of the blank.

Any ideas on what the tint is (it is natural) and any comments about your experience on how stains reacted to wood tinted like this.

If your blank is not a precarve, saw off sections you aren't going to use when you get to appropriate points in the shaping. Use those scraps to test various finishes to see how your wood reacts. Maple isn't the most predictable wood out there by any means!

Mineral stains or Spaulding. usually seen in softer red maple.

If it's in broad areas, it's probably heart wood.

It will stain over and you won't be able to tell it from the rest of the wood.

Don’t worry about it, use it. You will be surprised how it will disappear when you stain the stock.
