Patch box school?
« on: September 30, 2018, 05:33:29 AM »
Im trying to define what specific design elements that define a lancaster style patch box.    I am looking for specifics here, scroll types? Flowers? Number of Hinge knuckles? Width?   Length ?   Brass ? Steel?  Release buttons? Etc and so on .  I have been looking over the Hornaberger/ Kolar book The Lancaster Long Rifle and I am having difficulty nailing down what makes a lancaster patch box a lancaster patch box.
Opinions are expensive. Rich people rarely if ever voice their opinion.

Depends on individual maker and especially time period. You need more books. Zero in on a maker and a time period.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Flowers? the daisy patchbox is common among Lancaster rifles 1770-1800 or so.  Not exclusive

Number of Hinge knuckles? Width?   Length ?

Brass ? always when metal box

Steel?  never.

Release buttons? Etc and so on .  I have been looking over the Hornaberger/ Kolar book The Lancaster Long Rifle and I am having difficulty nailing down what makes a lancaster patch box a lancaster patch box.

 focus on specific makers

Goo,

Rich made a superb recreation of the GF Fainot patch-box in Patrick's book; this example exemplifies breaking any preconceived notions of a "school"!  There are links to those postings on this blog. Mike's advice is spot on as well, there are significant changes throughout the evolutionary development of the patch-box. By focusing in on a time period while doing your research you'll begin to see developmental patterns and should then be able to select one that suites your aesthetic.

A visit to the newly released Kindig book would assist you immensely. Even an old copy would help you decide which of the Lancaster styles you prefer. HIB
