The finish I used on my recently posted photos of a Jaeger Rifle was an Alkanet infused Linseed based oil developed by S.B. McWilliams at dustybirdshoot@aol.com
This oil has light tint of red, which adds a warmer tone to Walnut. Unlike stains which generally mute the contrasting grain colors in walnut, this product lightly enhances the contrasts. It drys slow, allowing for deep penetration and lots of time to rub out the excess before becoming tacky.
Mc Williams has two other variations of traditional English Gunstock Finishes. A Gloss and a Satin London Finish.
I have been referring my students to his products for a couple years now. They are very nice Finishes based on research of classic English references and a lot of experimentation.
