Been shooting 62 cal rifles and smoothbores for years.  I have a drafting circle template that I use and am looking at it now.  I have the 1 1/2" Diameter hole marked .62.  I sit and cut out patches while watching TV and I know that they don't have to be round, but it keeps me busy.
As I remember the 1-1/2" might be a little large.  But 1-1/4" are a little small.
H  Was always going to make a punch like I have for .54 cal
Hope that helps

A little big will made no difference.

A little small makes them difficult to get properly centered.

I have roll of patching that was left after I had got for rifle patches. It is about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches wide and I guess 2 ft. long now. I cut  at the muzzle.

1.5" sounds right to me.  That's the size I use.....

A the strip is a little bit too wide, alternate your cuttings - side to side.  Nothing wasted.

If too narrow, it's just too narrow.

To each his own.  I have always cut patches at the muzzle.  Centers the ball every time and eliminates one variable.

To discover the width you need, take your material and a ball, and place the ball in the material so the cloth comes up to the top of the ball.  Make a mark with a tailor's pencil or a felt pen marking the top of the ball.  Remove the ball, flatten the cloth and measure from mark to mark.  That's the minimum size you want.
