Mountain Rifle Breech Plugs
« on: January 23, 2019, 07:18:02 PM »
Breech plugs and tangs for our Mountain Rifle kits have been a headache for us since we first offered the kit for sale.  Until now, we have been using an investment cast tang that is then silver brazed to a machined breech plug.  While this has worked pretty well, it's a labor intensive process.  Dealing with poor quality and delivery time from foundries has been a real issue as well.  Finally I've never been happy with the process of using two piece of material and joining them.

So, we're finally at the point where we're able to machine them from a solid piece of matierial!  This is a big deal for us.  We've tried to have others machine them, but it's not worked out for various reasons.  In reality, these parts are difficult to model and machine and nobody but ourselves can really justify the time required to develope a good process.  These are machined just as you see them with draft and all of the complicated 3d geometry.

Now, this is one more aspect we can control quality of and can produce them at will.  An added benefit is the precision of the cnc machined product.  These are far and away more consistent than the castings we have used in the past.  With just a little tweaking of the stock inlets, we should be able to offer a tang and inlet that is pretty much a drop in fit with zero gaps!

Thanks again for all encouragement.  We're pushing hard to make progress and your support makes this all worthwhile.

All the best,
Jim and Katherine

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Outstanding! I may have to buy one in 45 caliber to go with my 40. 45s weren’t available when I ordered my 40. A 45 will do better on the metal silhouettes especially at 100 yards plus.

The quality glows when you look at that, I can almost see a halo. I just don't think you could make them any better.

Great to see - and the ability to use the computer to "match" the stock cut out and the tang will ensure a drop in fit every time.  For those not familiar with the CAD/CAM designs, you can make many changes and "Test" them on the fly without cutting any metal or wood.

Jim and Katherine are leading the way for quality, service and the ability to recreate at will....

Cheers,

Jon

Jim, Your efforts at developing and manufacturing your own parts keeps you heads above at controlling the quality in your shop. Your concern at striving to perfect each and every part in your parts package is very obvious. Regards, Jerry

That is great news, Jim!    Having made breech plugs with long tangs,  I really appreciate your accomplishment.

Thanks!  Glad you all like these.  I started running a big batch yesterday and realized I had a slight issue on some of the parts.  Good thing I caught this early on.  We'll try again today!

All the best,
Jim
