The 60 is home from builder TVM
« on: October 19, 2018, 03:34:41 AM »
Here we are 60 Virginia.   First day out went up 110 2F  .595 with a .15 patch.   3 in group at 100 yards.  Really like the barrel hand lapped does make a difference
My question is should I try .590 at tighter patch or keep tweaking the .595.    Muzzleloader is dream to shoot

That’s fine shooting!  You are good to go, I’d think.  Fine curl on that rifle, too.

That sounds like some real good shooting but I would still try some different loads just for comparison sake.Looks like you could sneak up on a herd of Tigers with that rifle.  :)

Wonderful rifle and wonderful shooting!!

That is a sweet gun.  Who/which TVM, Jack Garner or Tenn Vally Muzzleloaders.

How do your patches look ?  Whose barrel is it, what twist and how deep are the groves ?

3" @ 100 yds right out of the box is darn good. If that's consistently reproducible, I'd stop there myself for a hunting load and start looking for a 25-50 yd load that doesn't use 110 gns of powder, but that's just me.
With respect, I'm curious to know...why 60 caliber. ???
How did you arrive at that specific choice ??
Thank you, and good luck with your new rifle. Oughta be a dandy for about anything you want to go after..!!

I'm with you smylee.  I can shoot a 1" group but shots 2 and more open up my group considerable.   ::) ::) ::)

That's a beautiful rifle.  3" groups at 100 yards?  I'd be satisfied with that at 50 yards!

Afternoon

Tennessee Valley Muzzleloading building the rifle.    I had the guys at rice hand lap the barrel. Which did make the difference.    I should know but cannot recall twist.    Was 15 months ago.  Will follow up on that question
I am using .15 round patch per cut with track of wolf mink oil slight lube with finger.
Why 60....shot a few with hawken last year 54.    Did not like them walking.   I shoot 5 to 10 deer a year we manage does hard and donate lot to local food bank.   In addition the longer sight radius and thin front sight makes easier for me to shoot
I averaged about 5 shots in 3 inches.     I will be at the range tomorrow morning and will post some pics.   Going to be windy tomorrow will see who it bucks the wind.

My .60 cal Jaeger rifle liked 86 gr. GOEX FFg, .595" pure lead ball from a Lyman mould, with a .020" patch.  Mine has a Getz barrel with radiused rifling.

Many are unaware that there is
another TVM--Tennessee Valley Manufacturing. I have bought many component sets and stocks from them-good people and reasonable prices. They also have advertised complete rifles.

I took the 10 hour drive to set down and go over some specifics.   Looked at wood blanks.  Took some measurements.      Well worth it for me to burn a quick three day weekend.   Would suggest to anyone same thing

Souds and looks really good, Plateboater, but I would be trying thicker patching.

For a hunting load, that sounds just about done, though, if not having to wipe before loading anew.

A nicely smoothed crown makes starting the tighter combinations much easier. Tighter combinations have shown
much better accuracy for us.
With the normal machine-tool cut crown on a barrel, the result is 2 sharp corners. One at the outward surface of the bore and the other on
the inner edge of the groove bottom and land. This sharp edge will cut into the patch as well as pushing, bunching the lead up instead of
forming it to the rifling. The smooth radius can be made on a lathe or easily done with the end of your thumb and a piece of wet/dry 320 or
emery cloth in 320 grit. Push a piece of cloth down the bore an inch to catch the stone and metal 'grindings'. That piece of cloth or napkin is
easily removed with tweezers, needle-nosed pliers or a hooked dental tool.
