If it is a octagon barrel I just hold it in a regular vise with copper jaws.

Swamped and tapered.  I wanted to insure i had barrel good and secured before i start cutting dovetails and was afraid  of slippage. Thought about trying to cast of some lead jaws but but no need to reinvent the wheel.

Get a set of barrel jaws from Rice and a breech plug wrench you'll be glad you got them.

I agree with sqrldog, get a wrench and jaws from Jason at Rice Barrel company.  You won't be disappointed.  I used a regular vice with brass plates and an adjustable wrench for 30 years before breaking down and purchasing Jason's wrench, and regretted not doing it years earlier.

Get a set of V blocks.  Then you can use them for more than just clamping barrels.

either make or purchase a set of tilting vise jaws. Grizzly tool has a set I modified for my Costco china vise. They're flat on the side contacting the barrel and have a verticle ridge on the vise side. with a swamped barrel you'll only need to use one.

I lucked in to one of these:

I also work on modern guns where it is more necessary to have a good vice.

I also use a 4-jaw in the lathe while fitting a plug.

As mentioned it is very important to  have good blocks.  Metal V-blocks are great, I line them with business cards. .  You can use  fitted maple blocks and rosin (like for baseball players or violins).   That is very effective too.  For ML plugs with a tang a big cresent wrench will do.  Just figure out where the force is going and orient the wrench so you do not mess up the top of the tang.  For a patent breech you must have a wrench that fits the plug.  This is particularity important when removing a tight patent breech, like a TC.

My eye tends to twitch when I hear advice that recommends a bench vice and leather.  The chances of the barre twisting  is pretty good.  IF that happens damage will be done.  Tread lightly.

Maybe I'm not reading this correctly -- are you looking for a vise to remove/install a breach plug OR just a bench vise to HOLD a barrel/stock to work on it? ???

I am looking gor a way to secure my barrel  well enough so it wont slip when i'm cutting dovetails or installing a breechplug.   However,  after i watched Bill Raby's video on installing a breechplug i think i might need to take a close look at swivel jaw vises.

Your barrel isn't going to slip when cutting dove tails, there is no stress involved at all. If you get a REAL tight plug they can give you trouble and you might need some blocks, other wise just put it in your vise and take the plug out. I don't even use brass in the jaws. Only trouble I have is with the round barrels, I use a leather wrap and some rosin to get them out.
