It takes real bright orange color to melt the braze. Using the fire bricks really helps get that heat.

I'm thinking it was the folded .005" brass shim stock I was using. I had it orange using the fire bricks. I'll try the next one with some .020" stock I have. Already got the steel cut out.

I find the real thin stuff, unless jammed into the seam, just vaporizes or gets blown away. I’d do a test just melting the brass on a tile, covered with borax, before trying the actual ramrod tip.
