Need input on new pistol
« on: November 02, 2018, 03:11:48 AM »
I picked this pistol up last weekend and I’m curios of where it came from, what is it, help on the name on the lock etc. what I know about it is limited, it is a percussion double, smooth bore, bores measure about .575 barrel length is about 6.5 inches, hooked breach with a single wedge, the name on the lock looks like DePomcount & Gramley or something similar, I really can’t make it out clearly, just curios and would like to pick the brains of the experts a bit, any and all input is greatly appreciated, I’m including a representative photo of the Birmingham proofs that are on the bottom of the barrels also.

Can you share photos of the markings?

Simple explanation of what it is: a double barrel percussion pistol. Sounds like you already narrowed down that it is probably from the Birmingham trade. This style is sometimes called a "howdah" because double barrel pistols were used while hunting from the howdah (seat on top of an elephant) while hunting in India and Africa for defense against tigers and other big cats.

No I actually picked it up locally at a garage sale inside a retirement community, i purchased it with a small collection I got from elderly gentleman.

Here is a photo of the actual markings on the barrel, not the best photo but under magnification it appers to be the proofs in the drawings in my first post.
