New guy awaiting first Kibler kit.
« on: November 17, 2018, 01:02:48 AM »
Hello to all, new guy from Indiana here, first post...if this needs moved, mods please feel free. I couldnt find a welcome section so...here i be. So much awesome info here to be found, happy to be aboard. Im currently waiting on my first Kibler kit after discovering them about 2-3 weeks ago. As with many others I am very impressed with Jims kits, the results are spectcualr and I have talked with Jim and Katherine both...good people!
I opted for the SMR kit, as i am very fond of the style. The Colonial will definately be next. Right now I am gathering the few toold I will need, and looking foward to learning from the awesome info found here. I have a prfound respect for those of you who can start with a plank and pile of parts and turn it into a functioning piece of art. Maybe one day I will achieve that level of skill.

I suggest working along with Jim's videos.  They were cone with a Colonial but the process is the same.   Following along and possessing a modicum a mechanical aptitude will produce a great rifle with no major mistakes.  Have Fun.

Thanks fellas. Yes I have watched all the vids at least twice just trying to absorb info. Been reading the posts on here about them as well. Im pretty confident all will be well. Jims kit are just what a fella like me needs...I dont have a lot of time, nor do I have a lot of tools or space to work with, time i can make if need be, but space for lots of tools and such is limited at this point.

A hardy welcome aboard Michael !

I know you will enjoy completing the Kibler SMR, have fun with it and learn from the process. Soon enough you'll be tackling a blank.

I tried to edit this and lost it somehow...I originally planned on .32 cal but switched gears, I called Katherine and had her change the order to .36 cal.

Welcome. Good luck and the best advice I can give is the advice I ignored ``go slow, do not rush'' . The temptation to go fast so you can have a finished rifle is great, but  take your time, there's nothing worse than ruining an expensive piece of wood with mistakes that could of been avoided.

I did two blank build and a precarve before I bought a Kibler, it was very relaxing to put the kibler together.

Welcome. I am fairly new to the group and like you I’m waiting  in line for a Kibler SMR. I chose, after way too much deliberation, a SMR in .45 caliber. This will be my first build.
Keep us informed on how it goes.

I absolutely will, I hope you do the same. I didnt have a moments hesitation on deciding on the SMR, as they have always been ny favorite style. I have always wanted one as a squirrel rifle and I have had more deliberation over the caliber than anything. Originally I wanted .32 cal, but thought it might be best to go a touch bigger with the .36 cal. You never know when the groundhogs here may form a revolt.  ;)  And there isnt a thing saying I couldnt have one in both calibers either...I have been known to be just that silly from time to time.  :o

Michael welcome aboard an please ask questions. There are masters in here. Listen to them. Then like me are the school of hard knock people. Who have learned things the hard way by our mistakes. My best an only advice is to slow. Patience is the key word. Not sure on something walk away. Get good advice then continue. Good luck on your build. Enjoy the ride.

Im sure once I get going on it, I will probably have a ton of questions. Iv always been the type to try to soak up as much info about things as I can. Im the type that if I were in someones shop watching them build a rifle I would be constantly..."Wait, why are you doing that'? Lol.

Have You decided on the finish for the stock and metal? I am back and forth on what finishes I want.
The AF and Chambers Oil on Maple sure does catch the eye. Stocks done in pigment dyes can be
beautiful too. Looks like we will have a while to decide these things.

My hats off to you for having the gumption to start with planks. I hope to develop the skills to eventually go that route.

Tim, I ve seen a couple rifles finished with Aquafortis and Laurel Mountain Forge Honey Maple...I REALLY like that look. As for the metal, I will most likely go with a browned finish. Im also partial to one I seen on here finshed with the LMF Nut Brown also.

I am also going to add a toe plate. Im on the fence about a patch box, right now Im in the mind of no patch box because I chose the extra fancy maple, I would kind of like to keep this one plain so as not to distract from the natural beauty of the maple itself...maybe a couple tasteful inlays or minimal wire inlay.

Michael, as with the others, welcome!  Good to see new muzzle loading folks who enjoy making things with their hands.  You will find plenty of encouragement, and lots of good advice - this is a fantastic group of people.
