This June I had open heart surgery that was scheduled ahead of time. With that in mind I finished or canceled any builds I had for other people. I planed a "recovery" build that would be for me, take as much time as I wanted, do something that required a lot of research, and was completely outside of my comfort zone. I chose a target rifle, a Schuetzen to be specific.
I build longrifles, fowlers and Jaegers, all flint, I am a social target shooter, range time is more about socializing than paper punching and all my rifles are for hunting so this was beyond my current scope of knowledge or understanding.
With all our recent weather I have not had a chance to shoot it but what I built is in the pics below.

THAT is a special rifle! Well done, Kevin. You seem to to have "come through" just fine. Very special indeed.
That body-rest-leaning-back position I cannot do any more - too hard on the old back, but is exactly what
this rifle was designed for. Nice job.

Now THAT is a cool and beautiful rifle. I bet you'll have fun with it. What are the particulars?

On the downside, don't you think a 4-bore is a little big for social shooting? ;-)

The barrel is a Rice- Match Grade- 1"- .40 cal, round ball twist (1/48), Sq bottom rifling Lock is an L&R Schuetzen, triggers are modified Davis. Hardware is from TOW, Sights are Ebay rear - Pedersoli Front- ? 1" high with 7 inserts

Marc. a 4 bore is good for laughs in a social setting.

Now all I need to do is teach myself how to shoot it properly and figure out what loads it likes.

Kevin, that is a fantastic looking rifle! I've never seen a Schuetzen (sp?), and had been thinking about how difficult that butt plate would be, but I see it is a casting, and the wood work wouldn't be too bad.

You and I are doing about the same thing - my 6 1/2 hours on that machine was back in July, and I am building a Lehigh for my recovery. Sternum is not healing right - bones are rubbing together. But I try to do a bit each day, and go to the cardio rehab 3 times a week. Coming along!

But I couldn't see the pan or frizzen on that rifle! Got to be hiding somewhere!

And yes, the socializing is a good thing about range time. Lots of laughs!

Fine looking "Scheibenbuchse"(target rifle). I wish there was more interest in these
and the 200 meter offhand shooting that was done with them.Hamilton&Rowe's
book on The American Schuetzen Rifle has a lot of them that wouldn't be too hard
to copy or at least make facsimiles of.
I think I have made close to 100 of this style lock and the curved set triggers for
Helmut Mohr in Mayen/Hausen Germany and still have 4 to make for him using
the L&R plate.Pecatonica makes a stock for Helmut and Rice makes a .366 caliber
bullet barrel for him that is a fine piece with mild recoil.
Keep us posted on the performance of this fine and interesting rifle.

Kevin,
Your gun and efforts to make it are well worth complimenting and I didn't buy
Hamilton and Rowe's book on The American Percussion Schuetzen Rifle because
I lacked reading material.I have always been interested in muzzle loaders beyond
the scope of the Long Rifle and still own E.M.Farris's copy of Major Ned Roberts book
The muzzle loading Caplock Rifle.
