Making up a few powder measures out of antler. I'll make two or three more them dye them all at the same time.

Very nice looking measures. I tend to, AHEM! make stuff that's crude. Who knows; maybe my skill set will improve one day.

Your measures look great. How do you hands feel after all that work? I may be going about it all wrong but I get all cramped up after trying to
scratch on that hard surface.

Shreck, soak your antler in hot water for about ten minutes and it will soften up a bit.

B.Barker, that is a great thing to know!

Several years back I made some antler tools for my son to use in his rifle sling business. The darn antlers were really hard, so I gave up on marking them. Still very useful, just not decorated.

I shall try again, with a bit of boiling first- thank you!

Over the last several years a bunch of measures have been made. Bone, antler (deer & elk,) cow, water buffalo, and bison have been used. A goodly number of these were “experiments” trying different numbers of spirals, rings, faceting (octagonal or hexagonal,) dyes, and engraving patterns. Some were more successful than others. And then there were those that sadly the best thing that could be said about them is they are a troublesome memory.

I use a mixture of rit dye for the base color and past wax with some black pigment to darken things up.

I've whittled and carved a few things. Interested in trying antler, and even more so now that I've seen your work. Those look great. Is it hard on the tools? And the hands? my hands tend to cramp up lately.

Antler is easy on tools for the most part. The biggest thing is antler will clog up files if you don't clean them often. If you get cramps in your hands then working with antlers will probably have to be done in short spurts. I leave my antler as long as possible while doing most of the shaping and then trim and shape the mouth. I drill and open up the cavity after I do all my shaping.

I think a powder measure will be my next project, as soon as I get the carving jack sharpened correctly. Thanks for the motivational pics.
