Here is the rifle "BAER KILLR" that Brian Barker built this year .... she now lives with member Stoner Creek in Kain-tuk-ee,...Brian named her "BAER KILLR" and engraved this on the thumb-piece on top of the wrist,... (photo taken before finished,... much prettier now).. A Great Southern Mountain rifle,...!!!

I've used a RH version of the same gun. It does fine. As long as I do.

My area is tough bear hunting. Out of 250-300 bear hunters, only 1-2 bears are taken each year. So, it's a challenge.

And boys, she’s a shooter! This gun has taken an identity all its own. She made a trip to Pennsylvania in the spring and left there proud!!

Maybe inlet a sort of cap box, but have it filled with honey, Pete....

Maybe with "Hunny" engraved on the lid.... It should help with the hunting, and if nothing turns up, you can eat it....

Believable historical folk art is hard to duplicate in spite of its simplicity and whimsical nature. Done wrong, it looks sadly modern. Done right, its really great stuff. Folks back in the day--had different handwriting skills/styles from today. Research and study what was done carefully.

Mike Brooks did a good job of it on his Liberty gun. Brent Gurtek out of Duluth does a fair job of it. The Sibleys on their horns do it quite well. I am sure there are others.

Just remember When you shoot a bear it is like playing,'Tag" you shoot the bear,TAG YOUR IT" the bear thinks, now it is my turn to TAG you,all the parts the bear tag you with are sharp,,just saying.

My personal taste would be to have a good engraver do a bear engraving on the patch box with some period correct scroll and borders.

It mustn't look like a Real animal, if it does, it's wrong, if you know what I mean.

This is a tough one becuase bears are notoriously hard to draw, at least and look good. Not much more than a big black lump. I think I'd go with a horn scrimmed with bear designs and sayings to go with the gun. My bear gun is a .58 and I've got bear claws on the strap around my neck on either side of the bullet board.

You could take a bear paw/claws and make gouge marks in the buttstock like he got a little TOO close!

Modern? Would that be like an aircraft carrier skillfully engraved on the replacement
cylinder of a Colt Navy in Farris's Gun Shop in Portsmouth,Ohio over 60 years ago?

A lot of good ideas. I'll give it all some thought. I had to special order the gun and should get it this month. I'll wait to see how the wood looks. Doing a horn also caught my attention.

Funny how obvious that seems to me now, but had never thought about it (having been fascinated by the guys who do realistic animals and persons-but they work on moderns). And the lettering being "off" but in the olde ways not new...whole new train of thought.

Thumb piece looks good.

I've been trying to come up with a folk-art/minimalistic representation of a bear for awhile now, and it always ends up looking like a pig at best.

It mustn't look like a Real animal, if it does, it's wrong, if you know what I mean.

Great way of putting it.
