Horn Wanted
« on: December 14, 2018, 12:46:21 PM »
Looking to commission a horn for my .40 cal Southern firelock. Wanting a plain early 19th century style, of medium size, dyed to look a bit aged.

Can I get some recommendations for horners to do the work? Not into the horn community so don’t know “who’s who” as it were. Thanks cordially,

-Smokey P.

GA Turner had a couple for sale in the "items for sale" section a while back, they may still be for sale. He makes nice horns, I really like the one I have. He had a couple banded horns for sale, if I had extra cash on hand I would have bought one myself.

Smokey,

What about an original horn?
The smaller old plain ones don't go for a great deal I don't think. Not as much as newly made ones I'd have said.

There are several capable Horner’s on this site and other sites. So that would be a long list! For what it’s worth, I have some horns already made up for sale at a few events I attend. Several of these would fit into the category you’re describing. PM me and I can send you pictures and prices of what I have on hand already made.

Ebay has lots of horns for sale.
The Horners Bench is a good source for Horns.  http://thehornersbench.proboards.com/

I thought about that, but I'm a bit nervous about storing a quarter pound or more of powder under by arm in a 150+ year old horn. I'd be really worried there might be cracks and imperfections that might spell disaster!

Smokey,

If you ran beeswax around the plug to be sure it was sealed, I know I'd rather go with an original.

I have pne like that but no photos at present. Came from NC if I recall right.

Some of those Ebay horns make you want to lose your dinner!

I agree lot of horns I would not buy, but I have bought 3 very nice Scott Sibley scrimshawed horns off ebay at very good prices.  I also bought a Kenny Robertson scrimshawed horn which is hard to find for a very reasonable price.  You just got to keep going back and looking at what new in listings.

If you want to buy a horn from someone here why not put an ad in the wanted to buy section with a price willing to pay or price range ?

;) ;)... Smokey,...I'd go with old (antique) if you can find one you like,.... already has the "patina" built-in,... can be had on eBay, at  antique shows, flea markets, etc.,... had a friend who bought a nice 11" southern horn with a carved band at the CW show in Nashville for $70,.. solid with great old look,... this is my daily carry horn,... has been in my family at least 5 known generations,.. so 150+ years old,... never had a problem,... good luck and happy hunting,... I will also attest to GA Turner's work.  I have several of his flat and somewhat plain but antiqued horns and had him make a horn for my wife:

If you want to try an old horn, once you find one blow in it to see if it is air tight. Obviously if there are large holes or cracks you don't want it. If it just lets a little air out, take some wood glue and mix it with warm water it needs to be pretty thin hard to explain that. Pour it in the horn, I'm not talking about a pint just a few oz. swirl it around and blow in the horn, that will force it into the voids, turn it up so any excess will run out. Wipe off any that comes off with a wet paper tow, tissue is better. Let it dry overnight and blow in it again, if no air come out your good, you may have to repeat but it will work.
As for Bee's wax...sure it will work but it is a pain to work with, the horn has to be warm, the wax melted and if it dries on the outside of the horn you will lose any patina that it has trying to get it off.

Thanks Dana. I don't think any of the horners will have to worry about me. I usually only make between two and eight horns a year.

Oh wow! What an ideal horn! I really like that one. Sadly, long rifle culture isn’t really alive in the desert wastelands of Las Vegas where Uncle Sam has ordered I stay... how I pine for the East!  :'(

I don’t know if you made your decision yet, but you cannot go wrong with Ron Hess (GA Turner) or Tim Crosby. Both are super guys with great skills. My wallet groans when I see their work. Their horns collect around me like my bride collects shoes. How can you possibly just have one?  Bob Hill makes some gorgeous horns too, but he has quite a backlog of work to keep him occupied. God bless, Marc

Eighty-six as of today, looked at them the other day trying to figure out if they would all fit on a Six ft. table at "Bama's"  show. Sixteen more in the works and more ideas than we can count, still work'n through Dr. Jay's and Art's books :)

Thanks so much for the recommendations, gang! I'm currently doing a lot of research.

A member he tipped me off to an outfit called Powder Horns and More so I went to their site and found a really nice looking horn:

https://www.powderhornsandmore.com/product/02-365-cureton-standard-medium-powder-horn/

Looks really what I'm going for. Does anyone know the quality of this company's horns?

IMO, that might be good for a cva rifle or other mass produced gun if it was air tight. I personally would get something with architecture and a correct look as well as dependability from Tim Crosby or one of the others. There's a reason that horn is priced at 50 bucks.

I am with James on this.  Get one from an artisan on this site or the Horn Builders site.  Powder Horns and More is good to deal with for unfinished horns.
