Need Old pistol identification
« on: December 18, 2018, 03:10:41 AM »
Can anyone help me identify the date and origin of this pistol? The barrel is  7" long and 58 caliber smooth bore. I could find no ID stamps on the lock. Any help would be appreciated. thanks Jim Alford

Hi,
The barrel markings are French and for St. Etienne probably circa 1740 or so.  The markings were used on the "luxury" firearms produced at the arsenal.

I would date it about 1760's, but I'm not an expert on this era of French pistol.

French, ca. 1750-60; very close to the types sent to North America in the third quarter of the 18th century as trade guns. Yours look like it may have been shortened an inch or so.
These are really wonderful objects, used extensively during the Seven Years (F&I) War and the Revolution.
