Not specific to your exact design but here’s some free advice.
Veering away from what you know and experimenting is always great. Life is boring if we don’t try new stuff right? But here’s where you can save yourself a little agony.
If you have a design in mind but aren’t sure if it will function, start combing through images of antique bags until you see a design or style that has at least some element of what you’re imagining. Don’t limit yourself to early/mid 19th century American hunting bags, look at 19th-20th century European bags too. Also, look at modern bags that have nothing to do with hunting. Even purses at Walmart or target have design concepts to them that have not changed dramatically for centuries. If your idea is feasible you will likely find it and have a better perspective on the reality of its form and function.
If you don’t find it, wrap your head around it the best you can and just try making it. If it sucks you got an education. If it works you are the man.
