8-32 or 10-32 ramrod accessories

I’m finishing my 40cal Kibler SMR this winter and need to order several ramrod accessories such as fouling scraper, cleaning jag, patch worm, etc.  The ramrod tip in the kit is threaded 8-32 as is my Rice range rod.  So, is it best to get an 8-32 to 10-32 adapter then get all accessories with 10-32 thread or just get everything 8-32.   

I’m pretty new to traditional muzzleloaders.  Thanks for your help.

Whereas uhhh .... ‘modern’ cleaning accessories are 8-32 tpi thread, I prefer and use 10-32 accessories for all of my MZL arms. But in reality there’s no practical or meaningful difference.

Perhaps less where I believe the 10 size to be the far more common size, at least when I see accessories for sale in shops or what the ramrod is threaded for when I may buy a new-to-me MZL arm, and from what I observe others to be using - I’d say most use the 10-32 size by a factor of 5-to-1, if not far more. Maybe more 8s used on smaller bores.

You could buy a 10 tip or re-tap it to 10-32.

I've used 8-32 for 39 years, seems to work but I don't think it makes any difference. I certainly wouldn't start using an adapter.

Since you've got 8-32 rods, just go with that.  I started out with all 10-32 and think it's a bit stronger, but shouldn't matter for .40 caliber use in general.  I generally just get a jag and ball puller for each rifle, so it's not a huge expenditure, and if you get a 10-32 range rod later, just buy 10-32 accessories then.

I like the 10-32 better and have everything for that thread pitch.  I had one ramrod that was an 8-32 but I just drilled it out and retapped it for 10-32.  no practical difference between the two though.

10-32 all the way. They are easier to acquire. It's what I have on my Kibler 40 caliber SMR. Wouldn't change but it's what you want and like not what others have and use that's important.

I've noticed no difference, but wish I had standardized on one in the beginning. I now have both and they never seem right for the particular gun I'm shooting.

Why start mucking around with this? You have a range rod, a ram rod and they are set up...why try and make it complicated?

I use 8-32 because as others said my CF stuff is 8-32. One lesson I learned though is to get jags with steel threads. Some have threads turned from the same brass blank as the rest of the tool and the brass thread breaks off at the most inappropriate time.

Bear, that happened to me in a shoot at Fort Bridger Rendezvous.  I was using my GRRW .45 Leman I built in their shop and didn't know much about black powder shooting.  Had a fouled barrel and stuck a ball part way down, managed to break off the brass 8x32 cleaning jag in trying to seat the ball.  Had to go home and pull the breech plug and push the cleaning jag out the muzzle.  Then I went to steel shanked 10 x 32 and continue to this day.

My threaded ends are all made from drilled out cartridge cases having small primer pockets.  I drill through and tap for 10-32, then gradually file to fit the rod to the case.  The rod is J-B welded to the case, then pinned.  I do drill the end of the rod for a little relief and use .30 Carbine, .38 Spl., .32 Auto,...and whatever straight walls.

S.Bear. Because I am lazy  I oft times buy CF rifle and shotgun jags, (if available locally), cut off the brass threads and shank  then centre-drill, drill and thread for either 8x32 or 10x32, whatever is needed.
I will also chuck them to in the lathe OR electric drill held in the bench vice and file them down if needed  so they use a doubled patch of flanellet for s cleaning patch
I find the doubled patch to be very important for cleaning deep grooved rounded rifling.

I use an adapter 8-32 to 10-32 for my muzzleloading stuff and 8-32 for the modern stuff

i always prefer to build a new ramrod for a new gun, using my own rod wood, kibler kit included.  i always use double ended brass ferrules glued and pinned at both ends after the wood is tenoned, ferrule thread size of one's choice.  the muzzle end gets the jag for patching (if need be) and the stock end is for ball ramming - this eliminates that annoying time wasting rod flipping during the loading process.  ymmv.

I like 10-32 but my .40 has a dainty little rammer with 8-32. Here is what I did so I could cover all the bases with one range rod. Made an adapter that stores in the handle.
