A small tapping jig
« on: December 30, 2018, 11:57:31 PM »
Something similar may have been shown here before, but I thought this may be of interest to someone. I made this simple jig for tapping small holes many years ago. It has tapped may hundreds of holes. The jig is made from a scrap piece of 1" thick aluminum, but any metal will work. It makes it easy to tap perpendicular holes into small parts, and has resulted in almost zero broken taps.

I'm assuming the knurling doesn't interfere with the accuracy,

Bob, the knurling sits in a relieved area. It does not reach the bearing surface of the chuck, so no problem with accuracy or wear.

Mighty fancy tool ;). a Little bit "overkill" but it is very nice. A lot of machinists make a tapping block for this kind of work. All that is needed is a 1" square block (or so) of metal with a hole drilled through the center of the block the O.D. size of your tap. You place the block over the hole you want to tap and insert the tap into the block and tap away ;).

Very clever Wolfgang.  Do you have a jig for using a die to thread a rod, such as a screw shank?

When I was a tool and diemaker we had a similar tool but the tap was in the vertical position....a little easier to use. Just rotate yours 90 degrees......Fred

Taylor, I rarely have to make screws or thread rods at this point. I made this little jig to thread holes for very small screws in my folding knife parts. I will be using it for some lock work now that I am finally taking some time to work on/build some flintlock rifles.

I keep this on my work bench along with the 4 or 5 taps I use most often. It is quick and easy to change tap sizes, and it can be placed in any position in my vise. In the pictures above I am tapping titanium. It is difficult, and I like to watch the tap while it is cutting, hence the horizontal position. Carbon steel taps easy, no problems.

This will show it better Sydney, the knurling is below the outer surface of the chuck.
