Comments:

This style patchbox was heavily influenced by the superior work of Thomas Simpson of Sumner County, Tennessee. However, it was made later in the percussion era by a lesser skilled gunsmith. The captured lid patchbox is undoubtedly cast brass rather than sheet brass. Several unsigned rifles with minimal decoration, all with somewhat similar cast boxes lacking engraving and made after Thomas Simpson ceased working, are known. Based on their general stock architecture and mountings, they are presumed to all have been made in or near Sumner County, Tennessee.
