3 barrels in a day
« on: January 01, 2019, 06:50:51 PM »
Gentleman I spent the last day of 2018 inletting 3 barrels. The two on the bench are suppose to be my children's work. They want to try their hand at this gunmaking stuff. The one in the vice is mine and is my attempt at building a rifle that could have been. I have a family connection to Simon Kenton and this rifle will be my interpretation of what the rifle that Butler gave to Kenton. I will have traits that go along with the works of F. Klette.

Wow! Three in one day. I am getting ready to inlet my first barrel, so I am watching, reading ,researching everything I can on inletting barrels. I am going to do a 42 inch 13/16 straight barrel first, in an attempt at a Bedford rifle. I have a swamped barrel and an octagon to round tapered also. If you don't mind me asking, how can you do them so quickly? I bought a barrel plane from Tom Snyder, and between that, and sharp chisels and gouges, I guess I'm ready to start.

Flint 45, I have cutters ground up to different sizes to which I stand up a shop smith and attach a fence and run through at a high speed. I cut out the smallest sized part of the swamped barrel but have to finish inletting the rest by hand. I have the hand inletting part down to 4 hours per barrel.

Taylor, I can admit I'm a little anal about a clean shop. I sweep and clean up after every session, took the pictures this morning before starting.

Very nice set up but what I like best about your post is the fact you're getting your children involved. We have to pass this knowledge on to our heirs lest it be lost.

Flint45 it's not how fast you do it. It's how well it turns out. I have done them by hand planes, chisels and such. Straight barrels are very easy to do. If your careful a router will work nicely. I use a skill saw and jig I made up. Mostly at the time I didn't know what I was doing. BUT it worked !!   The skill saw way. I make 4 cuts. Then use a scraper to finish. Between set up and finish about One hour.  Oldtravler

I have a moulding head set just like that. They also made a set that only uses 1 cutter which makes it very easy to grind a profile.

Mark, you inspired me do inlet this Rice B wt. .45 x 42" yesterday. Actually, I had it all laid out and the side rails screwed down on the 1st. In total it took about 5 hrs. because the maple is ROCK HARD! This project will be inspired by Peter Angstat /Kutztown originals. No relation that I know of.
