50 cal Tenn pistol
« on: January 05, 2019, 06:35:13 PM »

Well i guess you would call it a Fantasy Tenn Pistol ,it has a 16" long 1-48 twist barrel and i shoot 50 grns 2f Goex powder .490 RB and .015 pillow ticking patch with Mink Oil lube. Wile sitting down and using my knees for a rest i can shoot 3" groups at 50 yards ,i think this is plenty good for Deer. I have never shoot it off of a bench so it might do a little better i don't know. But i told this to a guy on another forum and he said that is not very good shooting, what do you think?

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I wouldn't be tempted to shoot a lot further than that, but I'd roll a doe at 50 with your gun.

Don't let the experts get you down. TBT, most guys can't do 3" at fifty with any short arm, especially without a bench.  Benches are for load development/testing.

Benches don't hunt well, but also you don't want to handicap yourself with a load that isn't as good as one you might develop with good fixed shooting position, free from most variables (like a bench). None-the-less  I'd hunt with your setup and off-knee skills, and wait for the perfect shot.

That is just fine shooting with a pistol at 50 yards.  I suspect the ballistics produced by the load you described would be adequate for white tailed deer at that range.  If you can keep them all on a piece plate at 50 yds. I'd say you're good to go.
You'll not have to look far to find nay-sayers.

Tell that guy to bring his pistol over for a little competition. Oh and ask him to bring the pink slip for his truck as a wager. You won't hear from him again. 3-inches with any pistol at 50 yards is just fine.

The 10 ring for the slow fire 25 and 50 yard targets at friendship is 3.36 inches. If all 10's and a smattering of x's isn't good enough, i don't know what would be.
Your equaintances here all stand with you. Your other internet "friend", isn't.

By the way, since there have been so many replies to your post, a picture of the pistol is now required.  ;)

I'll try and get one of my Grand Daughters to work on it for me in the next few days, I really need to learn how to post pics.

Your Pistol looks nice, what's the info on it.

Well,I think it's OK and it does shoot good. Not Historically Correct in any way i know that but it is my first build and it is not a kit and i am proud of it ,like i said a Fantasy Tennessee Pistol nothing more. The barrel is the front 16"s of a CVA Bobcat barrel and CVA  lock polished and tuned  and everything else scratch built, the stock is from two pieces of wood epoxied together because i didn't have wood big enough and it is Poplar not Walnut or Maple.

Shifty- it could very well be quite historically correct. There were so many making pistols in the early to later 1800's, of all designs and builds.
This one might very well be very close to an original.

I have often thought about using poplar. On this pistol it looks fine. I like your gun fine. Dave F 8) 8)

I like the look of your pistol better than the Pedersoli

I had never thought to use a buck's skull cap to display a pistol. I now need to find an appropriate skull cap!

Maybe with a moose head I could display several long arms!!
