Side plate for the JAeger
« on: June 15, 2009, 05:11:33 PM »
Yes, I know, I know, when will I finish the darn gun? I am working again on it, after getting burned out, then recharged. The best feeling is to get back in, and then get excited by what is happening in front of your eyes. I can't rush this kind of thing.

Acer

a preview only. much more to come, areas to be darkened, defined, sections to be highlighted, and more. I do this by darkening the plate with 'brass black' and sanding it off to reveal the design better. Over and over, I re-engrave, darken,  until I get the look I like. By then, some of the fine lines have been sanded off, and I must recut them,  ;D

I cannot stress enough that for me, this kind of thing has to be enjoyed to be successful.

Acer,

That's some fine, fine detail.  I'm looking forward to seeing it complete some day, but you don't have to tell me about slow progress.  I'll typically go hot & cold several times during a single project.
It's going to be awesome when it's finished.

That's going to be spectacular Tom.  I love the combination of bold deep cuts, concentric lining, and fine detail.  Your cuts look so confident.

That is looking great!

I can't wait to see it finished.  I admire your diligence at the tqask.  Few of us have that level of commitment to out craft or the skill to pull it off.  You are an inspiration!

Zack, I'll try to answer best I can....

I engrave the major elements, the ones that are most important, first. Then I add stuff around them. In order for the satyr or faun, to stand out, he must be against a dark background. His hair, which is dark, must be against a light background. By varying the texture and the dark/light of the bushes, I can make almost every part of the faun visually make sense.

Here he is, engraved in, but no background at'all, at'all. (Irish for 'at all')

There are numerous pits in the plate casting, so I just engraved bushes over the pits rather than polish, solder, or plug them.

Does this answer?

Don't finish it! for heaven sakes if it was finished what will we have to look forward to? No little pieces or parts to tease us with...you are a master in more ways than one.

Great work.  How ever long it takes it looks like it will be worth the wait.  i do not have your talent, but I do understand that you have to be in the right mood to do the work.  It has been fun following the progress thus far, keep it up and thanks for sharing.

Tom,
WOW!  Your artistry is amazing.  The satyr in the bush looks like he is really inside the bush- like the bush is three-dimensional.  Thanks for showing this.
I hope you bring it to Dixon's, finished or not.

Thanks Tom, i think i can see whats going on now, i like the idea of just making the pits part of the design. seeing the faun without the bushes behind it are really illustrative of your process, by the way he is standing out there in two dimensional space, and the way he sinks into the three dimensional space off of the surface of the plate as the bush is engraved tells me you have a pretty good image in your head of where you are going when you start, even though you dont use engravers white layout goop or whatever its called...so in a word, yes your post answered my question...(i know, why couldnt i have just said that? ::) )

I second this!  What would Dixon's be without a hike up the hill to see the past year's progress?!?!  Looks great, can't wait to see it this year.

They jaeger will come to Dixon's ....again.... a little more progress, another year...

There should be more scenery to the left, between the faun and the front screw. Maybe a deer, a dog, and more bushes, god am I beginning to hate bushes.

I have more parts to engrave, but I have learned to take it one area at a time. ;D

Mels, this is with a GraverMach and scope. I have not done this kind of engraving by hammer and chisel.
