« on: January 12, 2019, 08:46:09 PM »
I have a 3/8 ramrod that fits the 40 cal barrel just the way i woild want. I get confused when ordering pipes. What size would i get for this rod and would pipes that will fit the rod look to faf on the 40?  What size ramrod do you guys use on the 40?  This is my first 40.

I used 5/16” on my .40. The 3/8” just seemed too heavy for the slender 44” swamped barrel. I use it a lot and have only had to replace it once in half dozen years.

I used 3/8" on my .40, 5/16" may look a lot slimmer but I opted for a heavier rod. I do try to stain the rod to be as close to the forestock color as possible to make it less obvious under the barrel.

Thanks guys. Beautiful guns. I just build some for myself. Sold a few and regretted it. Now Im just trying to get me a fun collection to shoot. Nothing fancy or as nicely built as the ones i see on here. Just wanted the opimions cause i want the rod to be as sturdy as possible. If i remember right the 3/8 i have is ramin from TOW. Ive got my barrel, tang, lock and triggers all in. Getting redy to do butt plte trigger gaurd and pipes , nose cap. Gonna use a peep like on the little fellas rifle the member here used. Sorry cant get his name to mind. My eyes are fading and that peep looks right at ome on t h at rifle.

I used a 5/16" on my 38 A-weight.  Besides being too big visually, and messing with the V-shaped fore end, even if it was shaved down some a  3/8" RR would have just been too snug of a fit.

My ramrod is tapered, so made the pipes accordingly. The one close to the muzzle is a bit larger than the rest which are approx 5/16th  .   Barrel is an "A" weight 42 in in .40 cal

I would use 5/16" pipes. On a .50 caliber I just finished I used a 5/16" ramrod.  I like slim looking rifles and I also like a rifle patch and ball combination that I don't have to drive in with a hammer so I opt for smaller diameter ramrods to get the look I want.

My .50 Verner's rod is tapered, .430" at the nobby end, quickly tapering to 3/8" at the first & .320" at the second pipe and .310" (about 5/16")
at the start of the entry pipe which is appropriately sized. The rod continues to taper to .300" at the tip, which has a 1 1/2" long threaded brass ferule, also tapered
same angle as the rod.

Taylor made all the pipes to fit as the commercial pipes were not long enough and/or wrongly sized.

Verner - rod is .320" just fitting into this Taylor-built pipe.

Very graceful indeed.  My .40 had a straight 3/8" rod. .32 and .36 have straight 5/16" rods.

I have two .40's and they both have tapered rods:  3/8" at the outbound end and ~ 5/16" on the business end.  The pipes are made to match the taper.  Here are the pipes I made for my Kuntz build.  I used .032" brass sheet, as was used on the original I was emulating, but will use .040" from now on.  Ramrods:  I push the ball down the bore with the small end of the rod for a number of reasons.

Make them tapered. That way you will have the 3/8 you want at the tip, and nice and narrow in the middle for a sleek rifle. It takes me less time to make pipes from sheet brass, than it does to log on to a computer, order from Track or whoever. Plus, they look better and don't look like everybody else's pipes. Cheaper too if you are a tightwad like me.
