A Moravian Riflegun....
« on: January 12, 2019, 11:48:22 PM »
This rifle is inspired by the European stocked, early rifle, featured in the book, “Moravian Gunmaking II”, starting on page 51.  I fell in love with this piece the first time I saw it, and decided I wanted build something similar.
I wanted to keep the basic architecture the same, but “Americanize” it some.  To that end, I substituted a brass muzzlecap for horn, and squared the toe of the stock, verses a round one.  I also greatly simplified the side plate decoration, but kept the basic shape.
The rifle is stocked in a piece of Red Maple, that was not real hard, and subsequently, a little difficult to work with.  The barrel is a 31” Colerain in .54 cal.  The lock is a Chambers round faced Germanic.  The trigger guard is from MBS.  The butt piece is a commercially available one that I modified in the comb area.  The leaves and flower engraving were cast in the brass, and I pretty much left them as cast.  Some engraving was added to the comb area.  I also did some simple engraving on the cock of the lock.  I stayed fairly close to the carving of the original rifle, adding a couple things here and there.
Anyway, here are some photos.  As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.  Thanks!

Jez Ed, another Beauty! Way to many tweaks to list. The lock really fits the design well, looks almost scary, like it would spark like an aerial bomb. Always look forward to your next.

It does look like the sister rifle to the one in Moravian Gunmaking II. You did a good job replicating it.

Beautiful work! I was just kinda curious what kind of a drop or a pitch you have on a architecture like that?

That is sweet!!!  Even thru the photos, that gun begs to be shot/used/handled/hunted with.  You really did that difficult piece of wood justice.  I love the patchbox, and as others have said, carving and engraving, beautiful work.

Fascinating Ed.  You certainly won't see one of those every day.  I really like it.

As usual, your carving and engraving flow so very well together.

It looks like one serious hunting machine.

I especially like the shell on the patchbox lid as well as the thumbpiece/tang carving interaction.

I have to say that it looks like your tools were sharp.   :-)

God Bless, and best wishes,   Marc

Great job Ed!

Looks like you hit the mark of what you were after.  All features flow together well.
Very believable piece, and super workmanship.

Beautiful Ed!!  I love the carving because the designs are a little different from what we often see.  It looks like that gun would tuck into your shoulder really nicely.

Well, I had to go look up the gun before I commented. I like your take on it. In fact I like yours better than the original.

Thanks, all!

Mountainman..., I'd have to measure the drop again, but believe it to be a little over 3", at the heel.  It probably looks a little more because of the curve of the wrist...

Hank..., trust me, I wanted to go a little crazy here and there, but fought the urge.  That'll be for another one...

This particular stock architecture is really nice for handle and fit.  Probably why a lot of modern guns have similar architecture...

Thanks again,
