there is not a "standard" jag diameter. Rifling depth, patch size, patch thickness and the shape of the jag barbs them self will determine what diameter works for you. make yours a little large and try it, you can reduce the diameter until it feels right.

We like the jag to be sized, which depends on the internal dimensions of the barrel, so that a doubled Flannelette patch can be used for cleaning.
The doubled Flannelette patch well get down into the deepest grooves (maybe not Hugh's) normally encountered and will clean the corners better
than any single thickness patch. Rifling width, depth, shape and bore size all dictate the size needed.
There is NO fixed 'size' fits all.

Agree with 45-10. Try and fit. A lot of variables. I prefer a jag smaller than normal in order to keep from pushing fowling into the breech area. As you retrieve the rod and jag from the barrel, the cloth patch seems to bunch up and bring fowling out with it. Hope this helps...

When I make cleaning jags I normally make them .025" smaller than the bore diameter.  I.E .50 caliber would be .475", .54 caliber would be .515" and so on.

unless one has an abundant supply of consistent thickness patching cloth, it's always gonna be a cr@p shoot for a patched jag fit.  this is why i have a supply of very thin patching for double up use, if need be.  it also depends on why a patched jag is needed - fouling control is different from after-shoot cleaning.  for the most part, i size a jag for use with the very consistent, available, and cheap 2" arsenal one-use patches, for fouling control, and add in a "rollpatch" for cleaning time.  this is for both my flintlock guns and bpcr guns alike.
