Composite Gun/S.O.A.W Gunmaker's Workshop
« on: January 19, 2019, 06:01:58 PM »
Just got back from a week with Ken Gahagan and Ian Pratt at the S.O.A.W. Gunmaker's Workshop at Canter's Cave 4-H Camp in southern Ohio. Superlative instructors and great bunch of participants to spend a week with.   I started loose copy of a composite gun illustrated in "Of Sorts for Provincials" and learned a lot - particularly problem solving(!). If you are thinking about taking a class I can certainly recommend this one. While most days we work well into the night, Ian, as a serious student of Cinéma Vérité, brought a film for us to deconstruct one evening. A real treat.

Heck I'd like to go to that event myself. I'd love to channel the Pratt and Gahagan Zen for a week. It would be artistically very inspiring. IMO these are two of the top five most talented makers out there right now.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Greg - you wouldn't regret it. It is amazing to be locked in a room with Ken and Ian for a week. They are very generous in sharing their talent. This is a class that is is good for experienced builders wanting to up their game as well as beginners.

I've been going to the Gun Makers Seminar at Canter's Cave for several years now and have enjoyed every one of them! I've had the privilege of working with instructors such as Hershel and John House, Jim Kibler, and now Ian Pratt and Ken Gahagan. This year, my main focus for the class was to try my hand at inletting a barrel and drilling the ramrod hole in a blank; something I've always had someone else do for me. I was pleased with the result, even if it did take me all week to do it. Bottom line, I enjoyed the challenge and will do it again, if only to do a better job next time.

I've also been working on a rifle inspired by one made by Elisha Bull. He used a mixture of iron and brass furniture on his rifle and I incorporated both into mine as well. The lock and triggers were purchased, but I forged the butt plate and trigger guard, made the toe plate, patchbox (including springs), entry thimble, pipes, and muzzle cap. I also applied some aging techniques to some of the metal pieces. I have a way to go on this one, but it is a perfect example of the range of skills you can learn and practice at this class and by working with guys like Ian and Ken.

Robert and Guido were in my class and we all had a great time! "Pedro for President"

I didn't really take many pics this year  - hopefully someone else who was there will post some. Here is the gun that I did at the class last year. It was inspired by the Lewis gun on page 97 in Of Sorts for Provincials. I worked closely with Ken on it including hammering out the brass buttplate. Some forge iron mounts under Ians tutelage for their projects. One of the great things about the class is that Ken and Ian both bring a different, but related, aesthetic "vibe" to the class which is quite inspirational.

Good instructors for sure. Ian is great at describing how and why to do something. And you can't beat Ken's knowledge on fowling pieces.

I'll be adding a few photos in the next day or two but just wanted to say great it feels to see Robert's and Gary's work posted here , always cool to see the results of everybody's hard work and dedication. One of last year's scholarship students emailed me a video this morning showing him giving a gun he just finished up to his younger brother - this kind of stuff alone makes it all worthwhile.
