I've been going to the Gun Makers Seminar at Canter's Cave for several years now and have enjoyed every one of them! I've had the privilege of working with instructors such as Hershel and John House, Jim Kibler, and now Ian Pratt and Ken Gahagan. This year, my main focus for the class was to try my hand at inletting a barrel and drilling the ramrod hole in a blank; something I've always had someone else do for me. I was pleased with the result, even if it did take me all week to do it. Bottom line, I enjoyed the challenge and will do it again, if only to do a better job next time.
I've also been working on a rifle inspired by one made by Elisha Bull. He used a mixture of iron and brass furniture on his rifle and I incorporated both into mine as well. The lock and triggers were purchased, but I forged the butt plate and trigger guard, made the toe plate, patchbox (including springs), entry thimble, pipes, and muzzle cap. I also applied some aging techniques to some of the metal pieces. I have a way to go on this one, but it is a perfect example of the range of skills you can learn and practice at this class and by working with guys like Ian and Ken.
Robert and Guido were in my class and we all had a great time! "Pedro for President"
