Andy, what grade of wood did you get?

You know, I'm not sure. It has good curl from end to end. The curl is wide and intermittent, but I like that better than the super tight stuff. Unfortunately the stain came out darker than I wanted, so the curl is hard to see in the pics. Perhaps Jim can comment on that.

The way this came about was, like many of you who have responded to this post, I got excited and "just had to build one", so I told the guys at Martin's Station that if they would get one of the kits, I would assemble it for them, for a fund raiser. I told them to get the wood box and 54 caliber. Everything else was between them and Kibler.

Maybe we could talk Jim into some pics of the standard and middle grade blanks, either on this forum or on his web page?

Thanks Andy. Personally, I like the dark stain and intermittent curl, but I see what you're saying. Whoever wins that will be quite lucky!

Seeing your rifle makes me want one even more now! Love the dark stain and the slight modifications you’ve done. I think I will leave mine the way it is and possibly do some carving. Outstanding job to you and Jim both! I look forward to seeing many more of these kit rifles done.

The latest on the raffle.

The raffle is being called the “Liberty Project” and starts this weekend.

Pam Eddy will be taking the rifle and a bunch of tickets to the Lake Cumberland show, February 8 - 9. Pam is one of Martin’s Stations top volunteers. Stop by and see her at the show.

The rifle will also be at the Knoxville show, April 12 - 13.

At the Raid at Martin’s Station, May 10 -12, Mike Miller will be engraving the lock and side plate on the Liberty rifle. Soon afterwards, the official pictures will be taken and the raffle introduced on a dedicated page in the Historic Martin’s Station website. The raffle will run for a full year and the winning ticket will be drawn at the 20th Raid at Martin’s Station, in May 2020.

I agree on the fat curl, as I like that better than tight curl.  That finish may not be how you intended, but I think it is beautiful.  Unintended consequences sometimes come out super.   :-)
