patch box catch
« on: January 23, 2019, 03:08:48 AM »
When fitting the patch box lid catch to the release catch which do you file first? Do you fit the release to the already notched lid catch or do you fit the already filed release to the lid catch.??? Do you install patch box lid catch already filed before you attach it to the lid or do you file the patch box catch after it is attached to the lid??? Thanks I know it is a bit confusing but if you read it slow I think it makes sense.          Steve

I file the catch that is installed on the stock first and then file the lid catch a bit at a time sneaking up on the fit until I get that ever so satisfying click when the engagement is perfect.

I do it exactly as David Rase does.  It would be much more difficult to do it the other way, at least the way I mount my release catches.

I do as the others stated . Also I'll file the notch on the lid on a slight angle so the other catch starts slipping on, then file it more flat for a better bite ...

With the stud riveted and soldered to the lid, and the catch/spring installed in the end grain of the buttstock, I coat the stud with felt pen, slide it down into its mortise.  the catch will score a line on the felt pen ande there will be a definite stop when the lid is bottomed.  Re-open the lid and use the mark created by the catch itself to start your filing.  Allen comes at it on an angle so that he can approach the line gently, and thereby, have no slack in the catch at all.
