Any shows or museums in SE
« on: February 08, 2019, 01:33:24 PM »
Looking to build 2 rifles. .32 caliber squirrel rig and lessons learned from that a .45 or .50 caliber deer rig.

I've built all my T/C from kits - Cherokee, Seneca, Hawken, Renegade in both percussion and flint. Restocked my Hawkens from blanks.

Trying to find real examples of long rifles to check for fit. Like the Lehigh look but concerned with drop at heel. Also like look of John Schriver. Again trying to find a place to to handle some rigs to check fit.

Like the fit of my straight stock T/Cs but looking for something more historic looking. Located west of Jacksonville Florida.

Thx

Look for Deepcreekdale on this site.  He is a builder located in Lake City and he does the gun shows in Jacksonville, Lake city and a few other areas.  He usually has a good selection of different rifles with him at the shows.  Also, look for information concerning the Brushy Creek Muzzleloaders spring shoot in Lenox Georgia coming up in March.  The club info is posted on Facebook.  There will be some builders there as well as others who would gladly let you handle their rifles in order to get a feel.  I live in Lake city also, but I only tend to build in the Southern Mountain style and starting to build in the Bedford style, so mine have lots of drop.  I am finishing a Lehigh rifle that should also be at the Brushy Creek shoot.  If you are over this way, you are welcome to come by and handle these to get an idea.  Dale does have a Hawken style rifle he usually has at the shows.

I would consider Jim Kiblers southern mountain rifle. The are easy to put together and 100% historically accurate. Best handling long barreled (44") I have ever handled and shoots minute of squirrel all day long!

Only drawback is how easy it is to put together. https://www.jimkibler.net/southern-mountain-rifle-kit-overview.html

Make a try stock and you will know exactly what length of pull and drop will fit you perfectly.

I transferred the measurements from my try stock to my gun pattern and can close my eyes, shoulder my rifle, open my eyes and be looking down the barrel with my sights perfectly aligned.

If you are looking for museums try the Camden archives in Camden South Carolina they have quite alot of old guns.    A bit away from North Florida but worth it to see if you are passing through.
