There was a thread short time ago that showd a home made hollow mill for shaping spring posts. Can't find it. Can anyone help?

Best regards

I have made counterbores and they can be used to shape spring post. I used O-1 tool steel (drill rod) and harden & tempered after I sharpened them.

Are you referring to the tit on the back side of a spring?

The tit should be the diameter of the upper leaf of the spring.  File it out square to start, then knock off the corners to make it octagonal.  Measure the thickness of the tit, and drill a hole of that dimension into the end of a piece of round stock.  With a hack saw, cut two, three or four cuts across the end about 1/16" deep.  Determine the direction of rotation of the rod, and with a safe sided three corned file, create a little backdraft from one of the cuts up to the top of the next one to it.  Continue until you have created a mill with teeth all around.  Harden the rod - if high carbon, red heat, quench, temper to straw.  If mild steel, case harden.

Be sure the spring is held securely in the drill press vise.  Bring the cutter down on the tit and make it cylindrical.  Easy peesey.  I'll see if I have a picture of one, and if not, I'll take one, and post it here.

They are useful for making the tit on a fly/detent, too.

I make my hollow mills the same as wolf but I just file the teeth on them.  For the tit on a spring I just file them on.

Even though I have a Bridgeport mill, I have always filed the teeth, seems to work well and less set up. Uneven tooth spacing prevents chatter.

I also file them and don't worry about accurate indexing.Like a rotary file,it's not
needed. My stud on the upper spring leaf is always smaller than the thickness of the upper
leg of the mainspring.I use the .086 hollow mill as a check and a #44 drill for the hole in
the lock plate. The detent or "fly" is done the same way.I also use drill rod, hardened and
tempered water hardening.Bill Large showed me how to make these odd little tools
many years ago and I have not forgotten any of it.

Thank you all for the input. I've filed out a Hollow mill for a 2mm post out of a piece of silver steel. Can't find water hardening drillrod in Norway. I'll try to harden it today and see if it Works.
