Recent build inspired by John Noll
« on: February 16, 2019, 02:23:18 AM »
I thought some of you might enjoy seeing some photos of a recent project.  I have long admired the preening peacock type patchbox used by several makers.  John Noll seemed to be among the best at engraving and carving this type of rifle.   This rifle along with others are pictured on my web site www.ReCreatingHistory.com

Beautiful work, Ron, that is very worthy of study.  Love the way you got all those divets centered in the squares.  Great engraving, too.

Hi Ron,
John Noll is probably my favorite American gunsmith and you did him proud!

That is some fine work Ron.  I especially like the finish work you did on that lock.

The German descent folks called that patchbox design a "Distlefink", or Thistle Finch, which we call a Goldfinch.  I know, it looks a lot more like a peacock to me too.  Some very nice engraving you did there.

God Bless,  Marc

Absolutely splendid - especially like the cheek-side carving.
What finish did you use to get that great color?

Ron,
Fantastic rifle! I love the intricacy of the carving and all the little extras you did within the carving designs. Also love the metal treatment on the lock and barrel. Great work and thanks for sharing it with us.

It's nice to see a super rifle that's not made from an outrageously curly piece of wood, very elegant. Needless to say, the patchbox is beautiful. This is what I strive for...

I got all the way to the last picture before I noticed that the wood is relatively plain...nice touch.  I too like the architecture of Noll's work.  Nice job Lucky.
