New Rifleman's Knife

[WH1]

The blade is 10 inch x 1 1/4 inch x 1/4 inch 1084 carbon steel, coal fire forged with stag antler handle, iron file worked guard, iron octagon filed bolster and silver end cap with through tang peened over. Overall length is 15 inches.

Imagine you give fire your piece, strike an injun and he falls. Yes another savage charges, and you’ve no time to re-load, so you reach for your rifleman’s knife and as he leaps you sink your blade into his breast, blood gushing from the wound. You live to see another day.

That's a sweet knife. I really like that stag.

I was lucky last year my wife Karen was at a big gun show in Vegas right before SHOT Show.  A gentleman there had a whole bunch of reclaimed stag handles from old english carving sets.  He was selling them for $25-40 a piece.  The only issue was he had cut the handles off but the tang was still glued in to the stag.  The glue was SET and it took a lot to get it softened up enough to remove the tang that and drilling lots of little holes around it. It was worth it though as the stag has been very nice compared to what you are able to get now.  I have a few pieces left, I have been saving this one for the right blade, judging by the responses this was it.  Thank you all for the nice words, always good to hear I am on the right track.

That is a serious piece of hardware Todd.  I especially love the guard. 

The ban on Sambar Stag has long puzzled me.  India not exporting that material makes no sense.  It is not like they are killing the stags to get the horn. It was worthwhile recycling that piece for sure! 

Ron Hess tells me he has two of your beauties.  Cornering the market it sounds like.   ;-)

All I can say is WOW!  That is a most beautiful knife and a testament to true craftsmanship. If I may ask, how many hours go into a knife like that?

I probably have around 18-20 hours total time in that knife spread over a week.  There is a lot of handwork draw filing, sanding, etc.

It’s apparantly to protect tigers. Seems the folks who collected the sambar sheds also routinely shot tigers, either to poach them or just as a protective measure etc.

So, it’s not to protect the Bambis, it’s to protect the big Meow Meows.
