Here's a rifle we just recently finished.  It's made from one of our Colonial Rifle kits.  The wood is a nice piece of figured walnut and it has a .58 caliber barrel. 

I built this in a fairly workmanlike manner.  The carving was done with a V-tool rather than being stabbed in.  This was a first for me and it was fun.  The results are somewhat different and I like them. 

As can be seen, this rifle was aged pretty heavily (by our standards).  Katherine and I worked together on this process and it worked out really well.  This is moving into a little different direction than we've gone before and it's been fun! 

Besides the carving, engraving and finishing, this rifle is exactly as we supply our Colonial kits.  No stock / hardware re-shaping or modification at all.

Very nice Jim, nice to see you head your work in this direction. Of course I like all your previous work too, you have always got that artistic inspiration thing going on.

Technique may have changed but the results are great as always. 

Like the aging, and the simple lines of the lock engraving.

Ditto Mike. I like the workmanlike manner. A lot of guns today are too pristine and sterile looking.

I really like this one a lot. All your guns are very nice but this one is a very believable looking rifle just as if plucked from 1770

 Lovely job, and you didn't go too far on any of it!

It reminds me in part of one Bob Harn made a long time ago.

Odd isn't it,? How a long -rifle can still inspire us on a longrifle forum, just like it's the first we ever saw!

Congratulations! You have taken our breath away once again. Fantastic work and very believable. I love how you put "workman like" into wood and metal and show all of us trying to learn what it really looks like. Thanks for sharing.

Jim, could you let us know what you used to finish the metal on this rifle. The barrel, lock, trigger guard and but plate?
And the process. Looks great!
I am looking forward to getting my colonial from you as soon as it is ready.
I have been playing with various types of finishes in preparation.

All done with a V grove gouge?  I have a few but they are all too big, I think.  What size did you use, and where can I buy one?
That is a very nice job, and as someone previous said, very believable looking.  Just right.
Thanks for your efforts in advancing this enjoyable hobby.
I am sure to others it is a profession, and that's great for them.  But for us with limited rescources, and even less talent, it puts a great rifle in reach.
Are ya working on a fowler yet?  You seem to never rest.

Stunning rifle, Jim. Keep it up and I'm gonna start to prefer the more heavily "aged" guns.  :)

How did you get the nicks and scratches on the stock and buttplate?
