Before I but flints do I just measure length and width so I know what size to get. My lock is the Dale Johnson, kinda like a large siler.

I measure the width of my lock and try to end up about 1/8” from the frizzen at half cock.

I used to make me a guage to carry in my wallet. I cut a business card size piece out of plastic coffee can lid then cut rectangular slots in the card to correspond to the width, length and thickness I wanted. When sorting through a box of flints at a trade event I could make sure and buy right size. Now I can pretty much tell without the guage.

Chambers says use Flint Size: 7/8" x 3/4"

3/4” wide. 7/8” long.

I like English black flints best. I love my flintlocks. I don’t know why they bothered inventing other guns once the flintlock longrifle was perfected.

I have had great success with French Amber. You can't go wrong with either. It's a matter of preference and local availability.

Used a LOT of black English flints - worked great, used French Amber flints - worked great. Tried Rick Pierce river Rocks - much preferred. Glad I have a decent supply now
that he retired - on us.
