Mike Brooks castings
« on: March 01, 2019, 10:38:33 PM »
I just finished up a little late period Carolina rifle using one of Mike Brooks’s castings. He calls it his North Carolina. You can find it and a bunch of other high quality castings on his website. Mikebrooksflintlocks will get ya pretty close. I found this one to be easy to bend, file, and polish (although I didn’t polish it up too much). We’re not going to call this a celebrity endorsement because I ain’t no celebrity  8)

Chime in there Mike if you have a better website address.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a lot more castings than what you see on my website too, just send me an email with your needs and i'll see what I can do for you.

And, as long as we're  shamelessly promoting me, ;) I'm offering classes now too. Anything you want to learn. One or two students. Anytime, as little or as long as you like @ $150 a day. I'll be busy through the middle of April but am pretty much open after that.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Nice work!

You are too a celebrity. Doesn't everyone want to come to your forge for lessons and adult beverages this summer at CLA?

Who the heck is this Mike Brooks you're talking about  :P

BBQ and adult beverages, yes! Too darned hot in August for this fat boy to be playing around in a coal forge.
I maintain the non-celebrity status.
Gots big plans for CLA this year. Stay tuned.

That is a great deal. I’d do a 3 day incised carving, engraving and antiqueing class if I could find the time.  If only I could bail on this Disney World trip.

Yes please, especially the teaching part. I contacted a moderator about it a few days ago and he either forgot or I didn't hit the send button.

I apologize for rambling on Wayne’s post here but I think this is important to add.  Any WV Veteran wanting to take any gunsmithing courses including with Mike Brooks can get up to $2000 a year through the Re-Education program.  It’s a great state program for Veterans.

Fine looking rifle, Wayne.  Mike, I think your plan for classes at your shop is great. You have so much knowledge to pass on. We all appreciate the knowledge you already  share on this site. Thanks again to both of you.

Impressive lock work.
Good news about Mike Brooks classes.  I’ve already paid good money to get abused by a master gunsmith in Kentucky; now I can get abused by another one in Iowa... just joking 🙃

Where the $#*! is Iowa anyway?  Mike are you next to that Field of Dreams?

I'm really happy with the castings I recently got from Mike.

Some good ol boy ran his 4X4 mud truck through there and ruined it so bad they didn't think they could ever afford to fix it. Not much else to do in Iowa when the frost is going out. :P

Wayne, I really like this beautiful rifle.  Super finishes.  Nice lines.   I'd like to shoot that one.  :-)

Mike, may I suggest that you add one of these photos to your website?  It would be very helpful to buyers to see the parts finished and in place on a rifle.  I think it would help show your fine work to be effect.

I am really pondering travelling to Iowa just to watch you work for a day.  That $150 sounds more than reasonable.  I sure enjoyed the video they made on you and your art.

God Bless,  Marc

I agree, selling brass castings that aren't all cleaned up has it's problems. But, I want people to be absolutely clear about what they are getting, which is a raw sand casting. If I took pics and advertised nicely cleaned up castings then sent out raw castings there are a bunch of people who would throw a fit. It's the nature of the beast. If folks want to see the castings finished they could look at all the guns on my new website. All the brass on all of those are from my sand castings….maybe I should mention that and I think I will. I suppose I should state which part numbers are on each particular gun. Good Idea. you get a gold star for today!
You're more than welcome to come out and get some learnin'. You will have to listen to my endless stories of my misspent youth though. ;D ( stories are no charge ;))
