Questions about early forging techniques
« on: June 22, 2009, 12:34:05 AM »
What forging techniques would have been employed in the mass production of gun locks in the mid 1800's I would assume that dies were used, but would some form of drop hammer been employed?

I have seen an old photo (of the Henry shop, I believe) that showed a trip hammer in use.  Cheers, Bookie

I got a little curious about the start of mass production in the early 1800's.  Eli Whitney was also credited with helping to develop the milling machine.  Not all parts were forged, some machined by this time.
